Image: Visit Oulu / Rosa Ruuskanen

This journey through Northern Finland offers a unique combination of architecture, culture, and Arctic identity, tracing the legacy of Alvar Aalto from the coastal city of Oulu to the capital of Lapland, Rovaniemi. Day 4 – Rovaniemi & Alvar Aalto Architecture

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide for a guided tour of Rovaniemi’s Alvar Aalto architecture.

The tour begins with an introduction to Aalto’s visionary “Reindeer Antler” city plan, which shaped the reconstruction of Rovaniemi after World War II. In this concept, the city centre forms the “head” of a reindeer, while the main traffic routes extend outward like antlers — reflecting both functionality and the strong connection to the region.

Alvar Aalto centre in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland

The tour continues with a visit to the Aalto Centre, the administrative and cultural heart of the city and one of the most important architectural ensembles designed by Alvar Aalto.

The Aalto Centre includes:

  • Rovaniemi City Library
  • Lappia Hall, a congress and performing arts venue
  • Rovaniemi City Hall

These buildings form a unified composition around a park-like square and represent one of the rare examples of a complete city centre designed by Aalto.

During the visit, special attention is given to:

  • The distinctive architecture of Lappia Hall, with its flowing roofline inspired by the shapes of Lapland’s fells
  • The City Library, designed to maximise natural daylight and user comfort
  • The overall concept where architecture, urban space, materials, and interiors form a harmonious whole

The visit provides a deeper understanding of how architecture, urban planning, and regional identity come together in modern Rovaniemi.
