Discover a lesser-known but fascinating chapter of Alvar Aalto’s architectural legacy in southeastern Finland. While many visitors associate Aalto with Helsinki, Jyväskylä and Villa Mairea, some of his most ambitious community planning and industrial projects were created in the forest industry landscapes of Kymenlaakso. This journey explores the UNESCO-nominated Sunila Residential Area in Kotka, Aalto’s extensive work in the mill communities of Inkeroinen, and the remarkable Church of the Three Crosses in Imatra. Together, these sites reveal how Aalto used architecture to shape not only buildings, but entire communities and ways of life.

Day 1 – Helsinki – Kotka

Depart Helsinki and travel east to Kotka.

The programme begins with an introduction to the UNESCO-nominated Sunila Residential Area, one of the largest and most complete projects realised according to Aalto’s original plans. Designed around the Sunila pulp mill, the area demonstrates his vision of integrating industry, housing and nature into a harmonious whole. Residential buildings, communal facilities and carefully planned green spaces illustrate how modern architecture was used to improve everyday life and wellbeing.

Day 2 – Sunila & Kotka

Spend the day exploring the Sunila area in greater depth.

Highlights include the celebrated Kantola Villa, originally built for the mill director, as well as the residential quarters, public spaces and surviving elements of the industrial community. Visitors gain a comprehensive understanding of Aalto’s approach to town planning, in which architecture, social welfare and the surrounding pine forest landscape form a unified environment.

The afternoon can include further exploration of Kotka’s maritime heritage and waterfront areas.

Day 3 – Kotka – Inkeroinen – Imatra

Continue north to Inkeroinen and the historic mill communities along the Kymijoki River.

Here, Aalto designed housing and community facilities connected to Finland’s paper and cardboard industry. The visit explores Tehtaanmäki, including residential areas such as Mäntylä and Honkala, which showcase Aalto’s approach to worker housing and community planning.

In the afternoon, continue to Imatra for a visit to the UNESCO-nominated Church of the Three Crosses, one of Aalto’s most celebrated ecclesiastical works. The church is renowned for its distinctive form, masterful use of natural light and flexible interior design.
