Day 1 – Helsinki

Arrival in Helsinki and transfer to the hotel.

The tour begins with an introduction to Alvar Aalto’s life and work through visits to Finlandia Hall, Aalto House and Studio Aalto. The programme also includes a visit to House of Culture, one of the most significant examples of Aalto’s red-brick architecture and an important cultural landmark within the Aalto Works collection. Together, these sites provide a fascinating introduction to Aalto’s public architecture, creative process and lasting influence on Finnish design.

Day 2 – Helsinki – Paimio – Turku

After breakfast, travel west to Paimio for a guided visit to the renowned Paimio Sanatorium, one of the most influential buildings in the history of modern architecture. Designed as a complete healing environment, the sanatorium demonstrates Aalto’s revolutionary approach to light, colour, acoustics, furniture design and patient wellbeing.

Following the visit, continue to Turku, Finland’s oldest city, where the remainder of the day can be spent enjoying the riverside atmosphere and historic surroundings.

Day 3 – Turku – Kauttua – Noormarkku

The journey continues north to Kauttua, home to one of Alvar Aalto’s most innovative residential projects. Built on a hillside as part of the wider Kauttua industrial community, Terassitalo is a remarkable example of Aalto’s ability to integrate architecture into the landscape while maximising light, privacy and functionality. Nearby, Jokisauna provides another glimpse into everyday life within the Ahlström industrial communities shaped by Aalto’s design philosophy.

In the afternoon, continue to Noormarkku and the historic Ahlström Works area. Here, architecture, industry and cultural history combine in one of Finland’s most significant industrial heritage environments. The highlight of the day is a guided visit to Villa Mairea, widely regarded as one of the greatest private residences of the twentieth century and one of the masterpieces of modern architecture. Designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto for Harry and Maire Gullichsen, the villa is celebrated for its seamless integration of architecture, art, interior design and nature.

Day 4 – Noormarkku – Seinäjoki

Today focuses on one of the most complete urban ensembles created by Alvar Aalto. Upon arrival in Seinäjoki, explore the remarkable Civic Centre, where the architect designed not only individual buildings but an entire civic landscape. Highlights include the iconic Lakeuden Risti Church, the library and the surrounding administrative and cultural buildings.

Day 5 – Seinäjoki – Jyväskylä

Continue to Jyväskylä, often referred to as the capital of Aalto architecture. This is the city where Aalto studied, established his first architectural office and began developing the ideas that would shape his career.

The day includes a visit to the Aalto2 Museum Centre, providing a comprehensive introduction to Aalto’s life, architecture and design legacy. The programme continues at the Seminaarinmäki Campus, where visitors can explore one of the most important educational environments designed by Aalto and gain a deeper understanding of his influence on Finnish architecture and society.

Day 6 – Säynätsalo – Muuratsalo – Helsinki

The final day is dedicated to two of Aalto’s most admired works.

Begin with a guided visit to Säynätsalo Town Hall, widely regarded as one of the architect’s finest achievements. Combining civic functions with residential and communal spaces, the building is a masterclass in the use of brick, light and carefully proportioned public spaces.

The journey then continues to the Muuratsalo Experimental House, Aalto’s summer residence and architectural laboratory on the shores of Lake Päijänne.
