The Many Cultures of the Russian and Finnish Karelia 7 days

Explore the Russian and Finnish sides of Karelia. Discover the Orthodox traditions, spectacular scenery and the grand cities of the area. Karelian-Finnish traditions and traces of left by the Soviet era are still visible in the White Karelia in Russia. We will visit the magnificent Solovetsky Monastery over the course of the tour.

Day 1

Bus transport from the Kuopio Airport to Joensuu, the capital of the Finnish North Karelia. Get to know the city on a guided tour. After the tour we will visit the Orthodox Culture Centre and the church of St. John the Theologian and the Illuminators of Karelia. Lunch included. Accommodation in Joensuu and dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2

Breakfast and check out. Departure towards the Russian border. Border crossing customs formalities at the Niirala border control station. Guided tour in Sortavala, followed by lunch.

There are a plenty of places in Sortavala that are reminiscent of the sorrowful event of the wars of the past. The journey continues to Pedtrozavodsk. Accommodation in Pedtrozavodsk and dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 3

Breakfast and check out. Guided tour of Pedtrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia in Russia, known for its relaxed atmosphere, rich culture and good food. We will continue to White Karelia and make a stop in the village of Kinerma. This ancient Karelian village has retained its original appearance with its old wooden houses, smoke saunas and barns. There are no modern buildings in the village. We will enjoy pie with coffee in the village before departure. In the evening we will arrive in Kem, whichis located on the shores of the White Sea. Accommodation and dinner.

Day 4

Early breakfast. Departure from Kem by boat towards the island of Solovetsky at 8am. The only beluga whale population in Europe arrives in the Solovetsky archipelago every summer. With a bit of luck, you can spot a glimpse of the whales. Arrival in Solovetsky at 10am. The Solovetsky Monastery is one of the most important Orthodox centers in Western Russia along with the Valamo Monastery in Lake Ladoga. The first monastery was established on the Solovetsky island as early as in the 15th century. Later the buildings on the island have served as forced labour camps and prisons. Today a small monk community remains in the area and some of the buildings are in museum use. The island will be explored with a guide. The duration of the tour is approx. 2.5 hours. After the tour lunch will be enjoyed at Kajut Kompanija café. Next, we will embark on a trip to the Sekirnaja mountain, which is highest point on the island. Experience the spectacular view overlooking the island and the White Sea. Return journey from the Solovetsky island by boat to the mainland at 7pm. Dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 5

Breakfast and check out. Bus transport to Finland. Border crossing and customs formalities at the Vartius border control station in Kuhmo. Lunch during the day. Kuhmo is Finland’s most forest-centric city, and the area is known for its highly developed culture, such as Kalevala, the chamber music festival and communal way of life.  

We will explore Juminkeko, the Information Center for the Kalevala and Karelian Culture. Juminkeko is a prime example of modern Finnish wooden architecture. The center runs ever-changing exhibitions and multimedia performances and has an extensive Kalevala collection. Accommodation in Kuhmo. Dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 6

Breakfast and check out. Bus journey to Nurmes.

Accommodation in Break Hotel Sokos Bomba. Guided tour of the Bomba House and Karelian Village. Dinner at Bomba House.

Day 7

Breakfast. Opportunity to enjoy the spa facilities or visit the beautiful tsanouna of St. Sergei and St. Herman, which is located on the shores of Lake Pielinen. Coffee at Bomba House. Check out. Return journey to the Kuopio Airport.
