Lake Ladoga and the Treasures of Savo-Karelia 10 days

On the shores of Europe’s largest lake, Lake Ladoga, history and the present meet. The world’s northernmost city with over one million inhabitants, St. Petersburg, is situated on the southern shores of Lake Ladoga. Day 1

Guided tour in Helsinki, which includes the Temppeliaukio Church that has been built directly into solid rock. Due to the unique architecture, the church that was opened in 1969 is one the main attractions in Helsinki. The journey from Helsinki continues to Savonlinna. Lunch will be enjoyed in the atmospheric Kenkävero vicarage on the way. Accommodation and dinner upon arrival in Savonlinna.

Day 2

Breakfast and check out. The day begins with a city tour of Savonlinna during which we will get acquainted with Olavinlinna, a medieval 15th century stone castle located on a rocky island. The waters of Kyrönsalmi, a waterway that connects Haukivesi and Pihljavesi, surround the castle. The tour continues to Punkaharju, where we will visit a ridge area overlooking spectacular lake scenery, followed by a visit to the Finnish Forest Museum Lusto. Lunch will be enjoyed at Hotel Punkaharju, where local food and natural ingredients play a key role. The tour continues to Parikkala and its famous Sculpture Park. There you can admire the results of more than 50 years of artistic work of Veijo Rönkkönen (1944-2010). The Sculpture Park contains over 550 quirky concrete statues that attract tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. A bus trip from Parikkala to Lappeenranta, followed by a visit to the Fortress of Lappeenranta. Accommodation and dinner.

Day 3

Breakfast and check out. Departure towards the Russian border. Border crossing and customs formalities at the Nuijamaa border crossing point. The journey continues to Vyborg, where we enjoy a city tour and lunch. From Vybord we head to St. Petersburg. Accommodation and dinner upon arrival.

Day 4

Breakfast at the hotel. A day-long guided city tour takes us to the most famous sights of St. Petersburg. Experience the rich history of the city and admire the ornamental bridges and canals, as well as the countless breath-taking palaces. The tour will include a visit to the Church of the Savior on Blood. Lunch during the day. The tour also includes a guided visit to the Hermitage Museum, which is seen as the heart of St. Petersburg. The museum is not only an art exhibition, but it also represents the history of the Russian culture. On the guided tour you will discover the coveted art treasures and hear the most fascinating stories. Free evening to explore St. Petersburg. Dinner included.

Day 5

Breakfast and check out. We will journey to Petrozavodsk via Lodeynoye Pole. Lunch in Lodeynoye Pole. Arrival in Petrozavodsk in the afternoon. Petrozavodsk, founded by Peter the Great in 1703, may surprise its visitors. The city has been almost completely rebuilt after World War II, because vast areas of the city had been destroyed. Located on the shores of Lake Onega, the capital of the Republic of Karelia in Russia is a city of stunning parks, rich architecture and culture. The city tour explores the main attractions of Petrozavodsk, its historic center and the modern suburbs. You will get to see the Monument to Peter the Great, the Kirov and Lenin squares, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Lutheran Church and the beautiful promenade. Accommodation and dinner after the tour.

Day 6

Breakfast. You can spend the day on your own in Petrozavodsk or join a trip (for additional cost) to the Kizhi Island, which serves as an open-air museum. Boat trip to the island of Kizhi, where you will find several unique wooden structures. The most famous is the Kizhi Pogost, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are souvenir shops and a café on the island. Return journey to Petrozavodsk. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 7

Breakfast and check out. Journey to Sortavala, where we will embark on a city tour. Time allocated for shopping and lunch. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 8

Breakfast and check out. Border crossing and customs formalities at the Nuijamaa border control station. Bus transport to Ilomantsi, the easternmost municipality of Finland. The Parppeinvaara Rune Singer’s Village combines the characteristics of the Karelian culture: kantele music, handicrafts, the Orthodox culture and traditional cuisine. Lunch at the village. Hear kantele music and poem singing at the Rune Singer’s House. The journey continues to Joensuu, which is a lively student city. The landmark of Joensuu is the Town Hall designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1914. Accommodation in Lietsu Boutique Aparthotel. Dinner in the hotel. 

Day 9

Breakfast and check out. Free time to explore the city of Joensuu. Worthy attractions include Taitokortteli, which is travel, handicraft and culture area near the city center.

In the morning we will travel by bus to Kuopio. The Kuopio region and the province of North Savo are the first regions in Finland to receive the prestigious European Region of Gastronomy recognition, which will be celebrated in 2020-2021. In Kuopio we will visit the Puijo Tower, which reaches a whopping 224 meters above the surrounding waters of Lake Kallavesi and 306 above the sea level thanks to the hill it is located on. Delicious lunch made from local ingredients enjoyed at Puijo Cottage. Accommodation and dinner.

Opportunity to embark on an inland cruise in the spectacular scenery of Kallavesi (for additional cost). The cruise is definite highlight! Admire the archipelago of Kallavesi and experience the city from a different angle. Late summer night’s cruise arrives on the shore just in time for the sunset and the lively terraces of the harbour entertain until the late hours on a warm summer evening.
